Boehringer Ingelheim is seeking an enthusiastic, creative and highly motivated Biotherapeutic Immunoassay Scientist II/III to join the Biotherapeutic Bioanalysis group in Drug Metabolism & Pharmacokinetics (DMPK) at our US headquarters in Ridgefield, CT. The Biotherapeutic Bioanalysis group conducts routine and non-routine assessments of drug concentration measurement (PK) and anti-drug antibody (ADA) analysis of protein-based drugs, and manages nonclinical and clinical PK and ADA bioanalytical work at CROs. The Biotherapeutic Bioanalysis Group also actively generates and characterizes critical reagents used in PK and ADA bioanalyses, and conducts investigative studies to support the interpretation of complex PK and ADA results. All of this work uses both customary and state of the art platforms. As such this role would also include investigation and implementation of new technologies.

The main responsibilities of the Scientist II/III include: Perform routine procedures for labeling, characterization and stability testing of critical reagents used in GLP/GCP immunoassay methods with minimal supervision. Implement new technologies and assist in training/mentoring of junior scientists. Perform all work in conformance with applicable regulations and in a safe manner. The scope of responsibility is within the primary discipline of bioanalysis with opportunities to branch into other areas including cell based immunoassays and applications involving novel platforms/scientific approaches. The primary scope of responsibility is within the immediate discipline and secondarily within a multi-disciplinary environment.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Perform labeling and conjugations of critical reagents(e.g., biotinylation, HRP, Alexa Fluor, SulfoTag, etc..) according toestablished procedures.

  • Perform stability testing and buffer formulation ofcritical reagents, as needed.

  • Perform protein purification of critical reagents, asneeded.

  • Perform critical reagent lot to lot comparabilitytesting.

  • Serve as a scientific monitor of CRO for outsourcedreagent generation, peptide synthesis and characterization, as needed.

  • Generate written documentation for characterization andstability of critical reagents.

  • Assist in the maintenance of the critical reagentinventory.

  • Initiate, design, interpretaccurately, troubleshoot and complete routine procedures independently andefficiently; Conduct exploratory experiments under supervision.

  • Propose, gain support for andimplement new ideas and technologies from individual’s knowledge ofscience and technology and understanding of drug discovery and developmentprocess; Perform literature searches, attend scientific meetings, and keepabreast of literature in own field.

  • May train junior level scientists inthis field. May need to act for supervisor in his/her absence.

  • Author protocols and proceduresindependently.

  • Effectively communicate and defend ownwork, orally and in writing; Contribute to technical reports.

  • Plan and conduct laboratory work anddocument technical data according to Standard Operating Procedures. Reportand treat data with a high level of integrity and ethics.

  • Comply with applicable regulations,performing all work in a safe manner; Maintain proper records inaccordance with SOPs and policies.

  • Initiates and completes routine procedures in an independent and efficient manner; Troubleshoots effectively and solves scientific problems independently; Operates lab equipment and is independently responsible for maintenance

  • Independently applies basic scientific principles, performs literature searches, attends scientific meetings, and keeps abreast of literature in own field

  • Proposes new experiments/technologies based on science as well as overall understanding of drug discovery/development process; Demonstrates expertise in field and contributes to training technicians and junior level scientists

  • Effectively communicates and defends own work in the context of team and department goals both orally and in writing

  • Reports and treats data with a high level of integrity and ethics; Write protocols, procedures, and technical reports; Provide input for scientific reports

Scientist II Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (e.g., Biochemistry or relevant discipline) with3+ years of experience in related scientific discipline; or Master’sDegree in related scientific discipline; or equivalent experience inrelated field

  • Demonstrates knowledge of field

  • Applies knowledge of basictheory and scientific principles

  • Able to draft portions oftechnical reports

  • Concise and accurate reportingof technical data and information

  • Ability to troubleshoot

  • Written and verbalcommunication skills

  • Appropriate level ofunderstanding of protein conjugations, protein purification andImmunoassays.

Scientist III Requirements:

  • Master’s Degree (e.g.,Biochemistry or relevant discipline) with 3+ years of experience orBachelor’s Degree (e.g., Biochemistry or relevant discipline) with 7+years of experience in characterization and conjugation of proteins andantibodies, or equivalent experience in related field.

  • Ability to operate and maintain laboratory equipmentwith independence.

  • Ability to independently draft technical reports.

  • Demonstration of written and verbal communicationskills.

  • Concise and accurate reporting of technical data andinterpretation thereof.

  • Proven problem solving ability.

  • Train and mentor junior level scientists.

  • Experience in multiple conjugation chemistries.

  • Experience with Chromatographic technologies and columnpurification.

  • Experience with LC-MS analysis of proteins andantibodies is highly desirable.

  • Experience with ELISA and MSD platforms is desirable.

  • Appropriate level of understanding and application ofGxP regulations is highly desirable.
