Boehringer Ingelheim is currently seeking a talented and innovative Intern to join the Non-clinical Drug Safety department located at our Ridgefield, CT facility. As an Intern, your project will support the Experimental and Molecular Pathology groups by utilizing image analysis approaches in the evaluation of histologic specimens. By integrating histopathology with current imaging techniques, this project will support development of new biomarkers for safety decisions. This experience is designed for a veterinary student who has taken at least introductory courses in anatomy, histology, and pathology or has equivalent practical experience, and has an interest in pursuing post-DVM training in anatomic or clinical pathology and/or PhD work upon graduation. During this internship you will have the potential for interaction with our laboratory animal veterinarians as well as other veterinarians and pathologists working in a diverse array of positions within the company. This summer internship is also open to eligible veterinary students undertaking concurrent dual-degree programs, such as DVM/VMD-PhD and DVM/VMD-Masters.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Histologic evaluation of normal and pathologic sectionsof tissues

  • Assess original glass slides for tissue anatomy, tissuequality, tissue artifacts

  • Responsibility for generating scanned images for imageanalysis

  • Assist with on-going immunohistochemistry and in situhybridization

  • Collaborate with veterinary pathologists in developingimage analysis approaches to support drug safety projects

  • Develop understanding of veterinary pathology as itrelates to the development of pharmaceutical products

  • Read, understand andfollow standard operating procedures and instructions


  • Must be a Professional Student in a veterinary medicaldegree (DVM, VMD) program in good academic standing.

  • Must have completed 12 credit hours within a relatedmajor and/or other related coursework.

  • Overall, cumulative GPA (from last completed quarter)must be at least 3.000 (on 4.0 scale) or better (no rounding up).

  • Major must be related to the field of internship.

Desired Experience, Skills and Abilities:

  • Minimum of two years attendance at an AVMA accredited veterinarymedical college

  • Completion basic school curriculum course work (anatomy, histology,pathology) relevant to program year

  • Previous experience with immunohistochemistry (IHC)techniques desired, but not required

  • Work professionally withlaboratory scientists and histotechnologists

  • Ability to perform basic statistical calculations andinterpret data

  • Familiarity with MicrosoftOffice software packages

  • Excellent written and oral skills

  • Must be willing to take a drug test and post-offerphysical (if required)

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
