Boehringer Ingelheim is currently seeking a talented and innovative Intern to join the Animal Resources department located at our Ridgefield, CT facility. As an intern you will be actively supporting an AAALAC accredited laboratory animal care program, harmonized with the highest international standards and company ethical, caring, and leadership values in support of intramural research and development programs for innovative therapeutic products. The basic responsibility of this position is to assist animal medicine personnel in providing veterinary health and behavioral management services to laboratory animal populations under direct supervision of the Environmental Enrichment Specialist. Additional duties may include assisting animal operations personnel with routine and non-routine husbandry activities as well as observing/assisting with in-vivo study related activities.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assists in preventive medicine program (in-processing physical examinations, disease control and surveillance programs, dental prophylaxis)

  • Assists in maintaining aseptic surgical suite, including provision of peri-operative care of surgical patients, including induction and maintenance of anesthesia, pain management, fluid and antibiotic administration and wound management

  • Assists in conducting periodic animal health rounds and communicates all abnormalities to Animal Medicine staff

  • Assists in collecting specimen and submission of samples to diagnostic laboratory for analysis

  • Participates in training and directed workshops to enhance technical skills and knowledge base

  • Complies with applicable regulations, performing all work in a safe manner; Assists in maintaining proper records in accordance with SOPs and policies

  • Assists in providing animal care and enrichment of routine animal colonies, cleaning and maintenance of associated facilities and equipment including cage sanitization and preparation for use includes animal handling, animal observations, reporting of abnormal findings, adherence to veterinary directives and monitoring of room conditions

  • Identifies improvement opportunities to create efficient and effective processes in delivering

  • environmental enrichment to laboratory animals and in addressing social and behavioral problems.

  • Assists in completing routine behavioral, social hierarchical and physical assessments of non-human primates and canines

Requirements:

  • Must be an Undergraduate, Graduate, or Professional Student in good academic standing.

  • Must have completed 12 credit hours within a related major and/or other related coursework.

  • Overall, cumulative GPA (from last completed quarter) must be at least 3.000 (on 4.0 scale) or better (No rounding up).

  • Major must be related to the field of internship.

  • Minimum one year attendance at an AVMA accredited Veterinary Science Technology College

Desired Experience, Skills and Abilities:

  • Completion of at least one course related to laboratory animal care

  • Direct handling of a variety of laboratory animal species

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction.

  • Must be willing to take a drug test and post-offer physical (if required)

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
